Bio

Lido Pimienta is a Toronto-based, Colombian-born musician, interdisciplinary artist, and curator. She has performed, exhibited, and curated around the world since 2002, exploring the politics of gender, race, motherhood, identity and the construct of the Canadian landscape in the Latin American diaspora and vernacular.

GRAMMY-nominated and Polaris Prize-winning artist Lido Pimienta returns with “La Belleza,” her transcendent new album created in conversation with European classical music. Following her breakout 2020 album “Miss Colombia,” this ambitious work marks a defining moment in her remarkable career. An iconoclast who creates from her experience as a Caribbean woman from Colombia, Pimienta challenges conventions while honoring her indigenous Wayuu heritage.

Despite no classical training, Pimienta composed for the New York City Ballet, becoming part of the first all-female team to do so and the first woman of color to create music for the Ballet. Her creative portfolio extends to television with “LIDO TV,” a surrealist variety show tackling issues from colonialism to feminism that debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. She also collaborated with Nelly Furtado as writer and producer on Furtado’s 2024 album.

“La Belleza” features nine movements that blend orchestral arrangements with Pimienta’s powerful vocals, exploring themes of ancestry, love, and cultural identity. From the exuberant harp-led single “Mango” to the reconciliatory “¿Quién Tiene La Luz? El Perdón,” the album showcases her dynamic range while making a powerful statement about indigenous and Black beauty. As Rolling Stone described her previous work: “Pimienta’s soaring vocal melodies resound like sunlight breaking through the clouds.”
