Bio

plainhead is a recording project built around guitar and fragile sample loops. It moves between the lines of a solo project and a collective band project – unbound by expectations while still breathing like a band, both on recording and live. Surrounded by the DIY-scene around their own self-founded recording label *new basement,* plainhead tries to introduce an ethos uncommon to the local music landscape in their hometown Munich (DE) and interacts between the boundaries of experimental rock and pop. Started off as a distortion-heavy shoegaze project playing earnest and estranged 90s-like songs, they have shifted into a more quiet and acoustic outfit centered around the winds of the clarinet and melodica. Especially formative records were the albums of early 00s Yo La Tengo and The Notwist.

Their first full length recording ‘I SPLIT MY ORGAN IN TWOS’ (2024) is 60 minutes of freak folk inspired rock music blasting from the speakers inside a teenage treehouse, at times loud and at times mellow but at all times rock. The latest album ‘You Are More Than A Thousand Words’ (2025) is less generous, rocks only at certain slight moments and falls apart again. Introducing more electronic elements and sampling, the acoustic sounds are delivered carefully by the computer, ending up in a uncontrollable and surreal constellation similar to the dark and heavy clouds in the sky. And at some times it rains.
